Early Childhood Literacy

Kindergarten teacher, Clara, and Pre-K teacher, Evelyn, led an interactive workshop on supporting our youngest students as readers and writers.

During this 90 minute workshops, parents were invited to:

  1. Look at writing samples from Pre-K through 1st grade
  2. Look at samples of "just right" reading books for kindertarten
  3. Talk to Evelyn (PreK) and Clara (K) about literacy development and how to support young children's literacy development at home
  4. Listen to the book The Snowy Day read aloud and see how teachers interact with kids as they read
  5. Participate in interactive literacy centers based on the books
    1. Winter Cafe - write a menu for Peter and his friends. Make things for the cafe, then label them with names and prices
    2. Write in the snow - use salt trays for writing words, letters, and names
    3. Story extension - write your own snowy story
    4. Rhyming bingo - find words on your bingo card that rhyme with each word
    5. Reading center - enjoy books from classrooms, including other books by Ezra Jack Keats
Handouts and materials will be posted soon!

Movement in an Apartment

Our PE teacher Eric led an interactive workshop on things you can do with your children inside your NYC apartment that will improve their coordination, balance, strength, and agility - all without costing a lot or damaging your home!

Eric shows parents that a pool noodle can be a balance beam or a racket.
Use this versatile, soft, and cheap material at home!

Check them out for lots of great activities and expectations for what your child should - and even shouldn't - be doing!
